¿Será que Microsoft derrotará a Google Maps?

Microsoft esta apoyando e invirtiendo una gran cantidad de dólares a OpenStreet Map y al parecer está grandiosa táctica ya le está dando fruto, pues Bing, buscador oficial de Microsoft, utiliza los datos de OpenStreetMap para su servicio de mapas.

Al igual que Wikipedia, OpenStreet Map funciona gracias al apoyo de los millones de usuarios que día a día suben su información a la base de datos que es revisada y publicada por la “Fundación OpenStreetMap”. Por el momento más de medio millon de usuarios han aportado a la creación de este software libre según los datos propocrcionados por la fundación.

El diario New York Times dice que el 71 por ciento de los casi 92 millones de personas que han visto un mapa en línea en febrero estaban usando Google Maps. Microsoft y Fundación OpenStreet Map aun tienen un gran camino por recorrer y muchos obstáculos para poder lograr quitarle su trono a Google pues les lleva muchos años de ventaja a estas dos grandes empresas.

Microsoft contrató a Steve Costa, fundador de OpenStreetMap, para trabajar en Bing como arquitecto principal de Bing Mobile.

“Su principal función es ofrecer mejores experiencias para nuestros clientes y socios, también será líder de integrar OpenStreetMap a otros proyectos de software abierto en los que estamos trabajando “.

Hoy en día el buscador por default para Internet Explorer “Bing“, ocupa OpenStreet Map para la localización de lugares, iPhoto de Apple dejó de utilizar el servicio de mapas de Google pues los precios resultaban muy altos y la red social Foursquare tomó la misma decisión.

Poco a poco Google va perdiendo terreno en la visualización de mapas y es aquí donde Microsoft encontró una oportunidad de vencer a su gran rival. Aún falta mucho por ver en esta batalla pero al final el usuario puede escoger entre estas dos grandes propuestas.
